History

Welcome to the Karoo

The Karoo is a breathtaking expanse of arid semidesert, celebrated for its enchanting succulents, dramatic rock formations and distinctive wildlife. As little as two centuries ago, the Karoo plains teemed with African antelope, among which the springbok stood majestic and numerous. Sadly, this is no longer the case.

As a family business from the Karoo, with a dream to see the region return to its former splendour, we at Montego Pet Nutrition were inspired by this rich heritage to create Karoo Wild treats.

The Rise and Fall of the
Game Meat Trade in the Karoo

Game farming in the Karoo has a rich history tied to the region’s agricultural practices, where farmers diversified their livestock with sheep, goats and various game species, notably springbok. This approach was not only environmentally sustainable but also economically beneficial. However, the landscape of Karoo game farming underwent a drastic change with the imposition of an export ban on antelope meat in 2011, leading to a catastrophic near-collapse of the South African game meat industry.
